Paul Newman

I was very sad to find out a couple weeks ago that Paul Newman had passed away. He was one of, if not, my favorite actors. A lot of that has to do with Grandpa. Paul Newman was Grandpa's all-time favorite. He compared every actor to him and every movie to one of his many classics. For years, Grandpa tried to convince me to watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (I think it was probably his favorite), but I wanted no part of it. My junior year in high school, I finally obliged and it spiraled from there. After that, I couldn't get enough of him, and once I got netflix, I put almost every Newman movie in my queue.
Grandpa would always tell me the story about when he took all the kids in the station wagon to the drive in to see Butch Cassidy. My mom even remembers it. I've had this idea for 6 or 8 years to try to rent out the drive-in theatre about 45 minutes from Clinton, and see if I could get them to show Butch Cassidy sometime when a bunch of us were home. Sadly, it never happened, and I think I'll regret that forever. Grandpa would have loved that.
I got Grandpa to watch Inside the Actor's Studio with me when Newman and Robert Redford (the other favorite actor of his) were on. We laughed, and joked once about how Grandpa's brother, my Uncle Don, reminded us of Newman and Grandpa reminded me of Robert Redford.
And to top it all off, the man makes the best salad dressing (parmesan garlic) and spaghetti sauce there is.
In honor of one of my favorite actors, and in tribute to some of Grandpa's favorite film moments, here are a couple of his best clips:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid:

The Sting:

Okay, this isn't actually a Paul Newman clip, but it is one of my favorite Friends moments - probably because it's the convergence of my favorite actor and favorite TV show. The background is that it's the morning of Chandler and Monica's wedding, and Chandler is panicking and doesn't think that he can make marriage work. (Fast forward to 3:51)

Hi Sissy. I haven't read your blog for awhile so thought I'd just "check in" tonite. It brings a smile to my face that you continue to share things about your Grandpa. I miss him dearly and know he had a big impression on your life as well as the lives of many others of us!! Have you talked with Donna Jean lately? I haven't forgotten about your wayyyy belated Bday present. Maybe I should just send you some cash so you can get whatever you want. :-) I have a job interview tomorrow (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. Send good thoughts for me...job interviews always make me very nervous! I'm hoping to score the job because it seems to be almost exactly what I was doing in Hawaii.

I love you Sweetie. How's your Fantasy Football team doing? My Chiefs suck....and Tony Romo is hurt so my Fantasy team is doing worse now. Hope to talk with you soon. Take care of yourself.

BTW...just returned to Portland from Vegas where I met Uncle Ricker and Teri. I went with my BFF of 24 years who lives in Spokane, WA. It was a good time.
